Everyone has their top album lists of the year going. NPR has their 50, Stereogum their own 50 here, Pitchfork asked artists to pick the best of here, Spin did half of that, and Gorilla VS Bear did a best songs list and 21 best videos of the year.

Antones returns with new booker & new hopes
This morning I read that Antone's has a new booker, who was also the guitarist for Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears (picture below - he is front center left), Zach Ernst, will be booking all acts for the new Antone's venue. Antone's is slated to open in a month(!) off of 5th and San Jacinto Blvd, downtown Austin in which Ernst indicates that Blue Monday will be back showcasing local blues musicians living and working in Austin, along with other national and road-bound acts. Blue Monday, prior to Antone's hiatus and location slump, was ongoing since the '70's with residencies from Austin blues players. Thanks to Gary Clark Jr, Spencer Wells(scientist & author), and Will Bridges (owner of Deep Eddy Cabret, co-owner of Lamberts & Arlyn Studios), Antone's will be back in the music business after being closed for almost 2 years. This is super exciting as with the trend of venues closing/threatened to have to close, moving, and/or just straight up not returning, Austin's music scene will once again have a home for blues and r&b under the Antone's name.
Hopefully soon enough, we will have Elephant Room back to normal operating schedule and not be involved in some sink hole damage.

23 days until SXSW - Links/RSVPs for you to get in for FREE (part 3)
Are you ready? Have you RSVP'd to the parties and all the happenings here and here? If you haven't you should start getting to it. Parties, invitations, and RSVPs are closing and links are dying so if you want to make sure you are at the same party or meet up as your friends (out of town or not), be sure to get your name and email on the list.
Besides getting RSVP links, info on parties, and/or rumors from my little ol' blog, be sure to sign up for Do512 and look out on Twitter for links and parties for SXSW fun. Its worth the time now to get searches and RSVPs going on Do512. They have a very simple dashboard to select the dates and times you are looking for free parties and things to do at SX this year. This website never disappoints and offers just as much, if not more, information than sponsors or party throwers even offer on their event. They update this website DAILY and it's free!!!
Also, check out Austin 360. They have a fun little database that will allow you to filter what you want (free beer, free food?) and what dates or areas of town during SXSW. Be sure to bookmark this page now.
You can do RSVPster if you want to shell out $40 (or $30 if you use the code: EARLYBIRD14) to have someone else RSVP your email and information by the mass. Remember, you are signing up, if you go with RSVPster you will be signed up for UNOFFICIAL parties and events happening during SXSW. This does not mean you will be granted admission to every party and/or reservation for the party. Shit, you still have to do your job and show up EARRRRRRLY, wait in line, and post up at that party to see the bands, line up, or showcase you plan on seeing. Take a look at what RSVPster is offering for you here. Be sure to choose wisely in what dates/days you have off so that you won't be spending too much money when you don't need to be.

My friends at ATXShhh is offering a $5 charge for you to see their spreadsheet and lists of free parties, what is being offered, who is playing when and where, and much more. You can sort by parties, venues, bands, days, etc. Here are some FAQ's on their services. It's my SXSW way of researching, gathering links, sharing with my friends/folks, and writing down what parties I RSVPd to, creating a spreadsheet of what is being given away (free beer, free tacos, free merch, free Pumas, etc) and having a back up to the back up party I was planning-to-go-to-but-now-it's-at-capacity-because-traffic-was-a-bitch and yada yada. Old skool SXSW way (guey!) is the way to go and gets me exactly where I want to be and who I want to see EVERY TIME. I don't like to reply on others except word of mouth from my friends day of show/party/event. It's your call though. You decide how you want to spend your money or not. I would rather save the money and cash I have for the week and days of SXSW for those that matter - bar backs, bartenders, and the venue. TIPPING IS ALWAYS ENCOURAGED NO MATTER WHAT YOU ARE EATING/DRINKING for free. Locals are you and me so tip accordingly!!! They are on their feet all day slinging drinks left and right no matter who is covering the bill.

This is an unofficial event (meaning no badge needed!) but it has filled up quickly with RSVPs on do512.com but if you 1) show up early day of, 2) sign up and get your name/email on the list, and 3) get ready to have a good time you may end up exactly where you want to be. No one can beat a riverboat party that meets at the Four Seasons downtown and heads out of Lady Bird Lake. Bose, Capital Cruise Line, and MusicTechnologies are putting up this fun party with free beer with 2 stages (upper deck and lower deck) on the boat. 36 days until SXSW begins. Links to free parties for SXSW part 1
Ladies and gents - this ain't no joke!
Links, party posters, RSVP's, advertisements, and communication all around on Twitter, FB, Instagram, and even billboards around Austin are advertising and promoting each party expected to be at SXSW this year.
Get ready and get to RSVPing!
FIRST - here are a couple of tips to help you out with all of this GOGOGOGO and RSVP NOW stuff for SXSW.
1. Make or use an account that you don't mind keeping, saving, and storing all of the emails you will receive when you initially RSVP to whatever party catches your eye. You will get a follow up email confirming you are on the list, then 2 weeks prior to the party/showcase/show you will get a reminder about how you are on the list and first come/first serve stuffs, then day before party/showcase/show you will get a reminder of where the party is at and what time, and lastly day of party/showcase/show you will get a reminder that you, again, RSVP'd for the event. YOU WILL GET EMAILS GALORE!
2. Don't worry if you don't make the RSVP list or the link crashes. Most likely the event is going to be packed and flooded as more and more folks learn that this party/showcase/show has so-and-so playing with free drinks/cocktails/swag, etc. Just mark the party down as something you want to check out and move on. THERE ARE OTHER LINKS TO BE ADDING YOUR NAME ON THEIR LIST. Plenty of parties and opportunities to go around.
3. Don't be overwhelmed. 90% of the links or parties you RSVP'd to you will most likely not make! You will get stuck being drunk, or still waiting in line, or getting to the other party/showcase/show early during SXSW. It doesn't matter. Sign up now and worry about that shit later.

You will get a follow up email confirming you are on the list, then 2 weeks prior to the party/showcase/show you will get a reminder about how you are on the list and first come/first serve stuffs, then day before party/showcase/show you will get a reminder of where the party is at and what time, and lastly day of party/showcase/show you will get a reminder that you, again, RSVP'd for the event. YOU WILL GET EMAILS GALORE!
2. Don't worry if you don't make the RSVP list or the link crashes. Most likely the event is going to be packed and flooded as more and more folks learn that this party/showcase/show has so-and-so playing with free drinks/cocktails/swag, etc. Just mark the party down as something you want to check out and move on. THERE ARE OTHER LINKS TO BE ADDING YOUR NAME ON THEIR LIST. Plenty of parties and opportunities to go around.
3. Don't be overwhelmed. 90% of the links or parties you RSVP'd to you will most likely not make! You will get stuck being drunk, or still waiting in line, or getting to the other party/showcase/show early during SXSW. It doesn't matter. Sign up now and worry about that shit later.

Not going to Austin City Limits Music Festival? FREE/low cost parties/events for Oct 3rd - 6th
Every year I struggle with the idea that Austin gets taken over by an influx of folks who are heading out to Zilker Park for the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival. Traffic is a headache, all of the local coffee shops and restaurants are overcrowded, Barton Springs Road is a nightmare and closed, the taxi cabs are completely inconsiderate, all of my friends coming in from out of town want to stay with me, there are a ton more people on bicycles and on foot in the heart of the city, etc etc. Don't get me wrong the festival and the festival goers add fantastic revenue to our city, local shops, restaurants, and stores - specifically last year the city pocketed $102 million dollars! Now, this year C3 decided to have TWO weekends, of the same lineup, so you can imagine how stoked the City of Austin must feel to benefit TWICE the amount of revenue and perks of having the festival in the heart of Austin. I get it! I GET IT! People love Austin and people love music.
If you are like me I try avoiding Central Austin and Zilker Park area whenever ACL comes around. In the past I used to be a part of the chaos, but since ticket pricing has gone up & the demand for everyone to squeeze into our beloved Zilker Park all for the same bands I love just seemed way too much for me. Since 2010 I have explored what other events and parties take place in the other local spots, sometimes away from the chaos near Barton Springs Rd, have fun events and things going on the same weekend everyone else is in town. Here is my list of things to get into if you are a local and not working but want to get out into the city and support the local scene and do thangs.

Holy Mountain and Red 7 (both right next to one another) will be hosting the Knuckle Rumbler Art Disaster No. 16. This event happens every year to kick off the ACL Music Fest. They are 'unofficial' ACL fest but shit, they been doing it since I can remember (they even host SXSW shows too).

Free music this weekend in Austin: Summer Solstice 6/21 & 6/22
Here are some shows/artists I will be catching this coming week in Austin. (most of them are free or cheap). Get your ass out there and support.

- Local Austinites Warren Hood will be performing at 5pm at Waterloo Records. FREE SHINER, YA'LL! As soon as you walk in go get in line, bring some cash to tip the fella who will be pouring your beer, and grab your drink and head to the front of the G-K area of music (near the stage).
- There are always in-stores at Trailer Space Records. Tonight's include pan pan and Rigid beginning at 7pm. Grab a beer from the convienence store down the street and even a slice from Eastside Pies and go back to Trailer Space for local music.
- Today is one of the longest days in the year which means Summer Solstice is upon us. Minor Mishap Marching Band will be leading a parade up and down Lady Bird Lake. Make a lantern on site and take it along with you! Take a look at the map of the route.Get there by 8:00pm. Step-off for parade begins at 8:30pm right off of Robert E. Lee Road and Barton Springs Rd. There will be 3 performance stops for you to shake, dance, and celebrate that summer has arrived.
- The Blackheart has free music tonight with Chris Catalena & The Native Americans, The Sour Notes, Leah Nobel. Park on the eastside of IH35 (its free there and no hassling on Rainey Street) and walk down to The Blackheart.

- Scoot Inn is hosting The Austin Chronicle's Cookout bbq and backyard style hip-hop show. Check out some local hip-hop artists and groups that will be performing all day beginning at 4pm and going until midnight. This is free and expect a huge crowd and lines right around night fall. Doors are at 4pm.

SXSW 2013 - FREE SHOWS - The Flaming Lips, Jim James, & the Divine Fits
As soon as this flyer came out around December and was posted on the Dwelling Space twitter page, I KNEW that The Flaming Lips would be here for SXSW this year. SXSW made it official today via their website:
"We are excited to announce that the one and only Flaming Lips will mark their return to SXSW by playing the Town Lake Stage at Auditorium Shores on Friday, March 15. The band has delivered some of the most notable performances in SXSW history, including 1997's Parking Lot Experiment and 2006's secret shows. The Flaming Lips 13th studio album entitled The Terror, will be released on April 2nd through Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by the band's long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and The Flaming Lips at Tarbox Road Studios. It's comprised of nine original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works.
Also on the bill are Jim James and Divine Fits. Jim is the lead singer and guitarist of Louisville's My Morning Jacket, and recently released his first solo record Regions of Light and Sound of God on ATO Records. Divine Fits released their debut record A Thing Called Divine Fits on Merge Records last year and will be playing the Coachella, Sasquatch and Governors Ball festivals in the coming months.
Shows at Auditorium Shores are FREE and open to the public. Gates open at 3:30 pm. See you there!"

SXSW is 3 weeks away folks! Are you ready? Have you taken a look at the list of bands coming into town? I have and I have been keeping a ridiculous long list of what bands sound like, where they are from, where they are performing, and who I can manage to see on my days off. This year official SXSW showcases begin with a soft opening (industry term for 'preview' or a kick-off) on Tuesday, March 12th. Many venues are kicking off music a night early like The Blackheart, Valhalla, Friends, Barcelona, The Main (old Emos), The Belmont, Metal & Lace (old Headhunters), The Saxon, The Parish, etc etc. These venues are hosting official SXSW showcases a day early for folks who are in town already for the SXSW Film & Interactive portion of the festival.
The full schedule of bands and set times/venues are live now but will be completely rolled out come the end of this week. Take a looksee here.
I have also been congratulating bands on being selected to play this years official SXSW showcases in person at their shows, on Facebook, Twitter, through blogs, etc. A total of 87 local bands/acts were chosen this year to represent Texas music. Here is a list of them all ---

Others Lives at The Mohawk on Fri 11/9 & Musicians for Hunger right next door at Club Deville
It's been almost 2 years since I have seen Other Lives come through town. Last time I saw them was for a SXSW day party where it was open bar, free record bags, free vinyl, and even did some dancing. I had 4 of my friends accompany me to come see what I was calling "The best band you'll see live". Soon after that show, Other Lives went on to tour with The Rosebuds, Bon Iver, and opened up the 1st leg of the North American tour for Radiohead. YUP! RADIOHEAD! In fact, Tom Yorke has released a remix of the title track from their album Tamer Animals.
So who are Other Lives?
Jesse Tabish (singer/frontman), Jenny Hsu (cellist and other percussion), Jon Mooney (violin, horns, piano, & percussion), Josh Onstott (bass & percussion) and Colby Owens (drummer) comprise of Other Lives all hailing from Stillwater, Oklahoma (who are GREAT friends with my homeboyz Fatback Circus).
Their Tamer Animals LP, Other Lives' second album, was produced by Joey Waronker - Beck's longtime friend & drummer over a 14 month period in Oklahoma in 2011. This album, personally, has taken me places I never thought I could experience by listening to such a polished and intricate album.
Since Tamer Animals, Other Lives has released an EP called Mind the Gap where all 4 tracks can be downloaded here for $2.99. The EP was recorded while on tour in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, England as covered here in a Pitchfork teaser. You can also hear "Take Us Alive" courtesy of Other Lives and Pitchfork here.
On my earlier claim on Other Lives being one of "the best bands you'll see live", you have an opportunity to go to The Mohawk this Friday, November 9th to see an hour long set from the band along with Indians, from Los Angeles, Indians' sound has been compared to "David Bowie, David Byrne & even Billie Joe Armstrong". Tickets here.

Also, right NEXT DOOR to The Mohawk at Club Deville for the Musicians Against Hunger event, Other Lives' friends, Fatback Circus will be playing an hour long set as well. San Antonio Beer Festival - The Offbeats, T-Bird & The Breaks, Act Rights, Lonely Horse, Whiskey Ships, and Advance Cassette this weekend
I am not quite the beer snob as I thought I was until I attended a Yelp Elite event in Austin where I got to taste some of my tried & true breweries from Austin. As I circled around The County Line at The Lake, I filled my belly with all sorts of beer from Circle Brewery, Independence, and even some tasty seasonal Saint Arnold's - these, respectfully, are my "tried & true" beers I always have when I am out and about in Austin. However much to my surprise, Ranger Creek Brewery was by far my new favorite...and guess what? THEY ARE FROM SAN ANTONIO!!!!!! This fact blew my mind considering the only few breweries I have been to in S.A. are Blue Star Brewing and Pearl Brewery - respectfully!!
I ended up having 3 sample tastes of Ranger Creek's Small Batch No. 3 - an inclusive batch of American Barleywine beer issues by the brewery in . It was my first barleywine to try and boy was I HOOKED! So tasty, rich, dark, and a strong alcohol taste was definitely ideal paired with the free BBQ I was having at the event. According to the brew master that gave me the sample(s), the Small Batch beers they make usually are experimental beers they put out in efforts to see what people think of the taste even though the brewmasters have NO CLUE how they taste! Amazing, huh? The exclusivity of the beer and the availability is rare so when you see the Small Batches out at the store or festivals, it is recommended you try it because once it's gone, it's gone!
I also got to try their amazing and lightly smoked Mesquite Smoked Porter beer which was SO damn good that after the event I went straight over to Central Market to pick up a handle of beer for my own. This is the kind of beer you want to drink when it's damn near cold outside.
Luckily, for me (and you too), Ranger Creek Brewery is one of the 150 craft beers you can taste and try at the San Antonio Beer Festival this weekend. I also hear it's going to be really cool this weekend with temperatures in the lower 60's as the high!!
Of course a ton of breweries will be out at the Hemisphere Plaza (where I used to play on the wooden playground as a kid) right in the middle of downtown San Antonio from 1:00pm - 6:00pm. Those breweries included are:
and SO MUCH MORE!!!! The main breweries I am seeing listed on SA Current's newspaper insert are the Guadalupe Brewing Company, Circle Brewing Co., Pedernales Brewing Co., and Roelbert's Brewery (which has no website on Google listed). The rest of the beers listed will be available but do not think the actual brewery company will be in attendance - just their beer which is fine by me!
Also, to not forget the local music that will be playing at the festival - my ultimate favorite THE OFFBEATS will be rocking the stage set for their set at the Hemisphere Plaza.

Come sip some REALLY fine tasty beers and let's marvel at the architecture around us of downtown San Antonio like the Tower of Americas, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, fancy ass Marriot, Mexican Cultural Institute, etc. You can dance with me too, if you want.

FREE SHOW Thurs. 9/27 - Girl in a Coma, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears
I like going to free shows and getting free things. I can tell you now, that after attending a DOS XX party here in Austin a few years back, that Love, Hope, Strength will be putting on a fantastic and FREE show in San Antonio tomorrow, Sept 27th from 8:00pm - 11:00pm at the historic Sunset Station.
With a description like this:

San Antonio's own, Girl in a Coma, will be opening up for Austin's own Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. DJ JJ Lopez (who I've seen more than a couple of times at Limelight a few years back) will be keeping it real in between bands.
I have seen BOTH bands a shit ton of times and well, this event is going to be no exception on how great both bands can deliver to their fans. Besides, it's been a long while since I have seen Girl in a Coma play in their hometown. You know it's going to be packed and they will be a ton of people trying to get in.
This is going to be fantastic. I am driving in from Austin to check it out myself. Who knows - there might be free DOS Equis as well..just like all the other DOS shows/events I have been to.

Trust me when I say this - be sure to lock down your tickets (THEY ARE FREE!) and they will ask for them at the door.

Ty Segall will be the soundtrack to my 30th birthday, respectively
I turn 30 years old on Saturday, September 15th. I plan on celebrating by seeing Ty Segall at La Zona Rosa with Thee Oh Sees.
Here is his new video in which he produced and edited on his own from VHS tapes in the span of three days called "The Hill".
I look forward to his new album, Twins, to be released on October 9th.
